Incursions - Program Details

Preschool

Program Plan:

  • Acknowledging country, introducing teller, saying Hello (Song) in various languages 

  • Interactive storytelling with movement, props, and sounds.

  • Children contribute ideas to ‘grow’ the story together.

  • Simple, playful response games that build language, focus, and expressive confidence.

  • Performances that bring folktales, animal journeys, and song-rich narratives. This showcase is designed to delight, engage, and educate. Special showcases include Deepavali/ Diwali: The festival of Lights, Asian folktales and Puppetales (Folkmanis puppets share the stage).  

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Early language & vocabulary

  • Turn-taking, group participation and listening skills

  • Confidence in expression through movement, sounds, and idea

Primary School

Session Plan:

  • Introduction to story elements (Beginning/Middle/End)

  • 4 - 5 Asian folktales, using various storytelling techniques

  • Exploration of Story resources (different types of puppets - indonesian wayang kulit, ancient indian storytelling device - kavad, japanese story cards - kamishibai, etc.) 

  • Performances that blend storytelling, music, movement and audience participation. Themes can connect with various literacies, cultural awareness, CBCA Book Week, and school curriculum topics

Learning Outcomes:

  • Narrative structure & creative expression

  • Basic Understanding of 3-4 different storytelling styles and techniques

  • Cross-curricular literacy skills: Introduction to STEAM concepts (where applicable)

Secondary School

Program Plan:

  • 4 - 5 Asian folktales, using various storytelling techniques

  • Exploration of Story resources (different types of puppets - indonesian wayang kulit, ancient indian storytelling device - kavad, japanese story cards - kamishibai, etc.) 

  • Exploration of how stories can encourage or/and inform different values and ideas.

  • Opportunity to reimagine oral folktales through drama and structured writing 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Advanced narrative craft skills

  • Introduction to Asian folktales

  • Confidence in expression and public speaking 

  • Exploration of different storytelling techniques
